Luck or Statistics of Drawing Odds
What are the drawing odds in poker that you will get the card you want on the turn or river? Poker can be seen as a purely statistical game and that would be a somewhat accurate assessment. While drawing odds in poker, keep in mind though that even the most sophisticated calculation does not take into account pure dumb luck.
Determining your drawing odds, or the card you need to make your hand, there are a couple of things you need to know. First, the number of outs you have is important. What this means is the amount of cards you need to make your hand of cards. Secondly, how many cards are left that has not been seen yet? Remember, there are fifty-two cards in a deck! You would subtract the cards currently in your hand from fifty-two as well as any community board cards (ones that are dealt face up).
Once you determine the number of outs you have as well as the cards still unseen, calculating the drawing odds is a matter of some simple math. Take the number of outs you have and divide it by the number of unseen cards. You will get a decimal number, so be sure to multiply it by one hundred to get your percentage of drawing odds.
Because the popularity of poker is at an all-time high, there are a variety of sources where you can find information tables that illustrate the breakdown of drawing odds. And if you are really ambitious, you can even memorize them. Just always remember that while luck plays a part in your card hand, it is the statistics of drawing odds that remains fairly consistent in the long run.
