The Strategy in Folding a Big Hand
The strategy in folding a big hand is not as cut and dried as if you decided to fold pre-flop because of a really bad hand. Folding a big hand in poker should not be advertised to the other players. It is all a matter of knowing when to fold or hold and also a healthy dose of psychology.
Many players try to find ways to keep in the game rather than cut their losses and fold. They rationalize in their mind that the card they need is just around the corner in the next betting round. It is those times that they are not trying to figure out the odds of winning. They are playing poker with their emotions rather than their intellect. Instead, by finding ways to fold, you are saving that money you could have lost.
When you have a great hand, folding can seem improbable. After all, you are playing for money and that great hand could potentially win big. By the same token, that great hand could turn bad in a heartbeat, so by getting in some folding practice on a few games, you will better adjust to knowing when to toss those cards and fold.
Folding a big hand is also a part of a psychological strategy. Of course, you cannot advertise that you are folding a big hand! This move will keep other players from getting a good read on you. If other players figure out that you are folding on good hands, they might use that ploy against you and try and take advantage in some way. Knowing when to fold is almost an art form.
