Giving Beginners a Hand in Learning Texas Holdem
Texas Holdem is catching on like wildfire on a dry day. More and more people new to poker are clamoring to learn Texas Holdem. The reason for the rise in popularity is because it is a fairly easy game for newbies to learn. Plus, the game is fun and since it takes time to master the nuances of Texas Holdem, you will always be finding out new strategies to keep things interesting.
Understanding the terms of poker is part of your beginner's education in Texas Holdem. These will be explained as we go along. Anywhere from six to ten people can play in a regular game of Texas Holdem. Sometimes, the game is played with less than six people; when this occurs, it is commonly called a short handed game.
The dealer passes out two cards to each player face down. These are called the hole cards. With each hand of Texas Holdem, two blinds - one big blind and one small blind - are posted. What this means is that the big blind player must place a bet before getting their cards while the small blind player places half the bet of the big blind.
Next, the remaining players are dealt their hole cards. This is the perfect chance to gauge the other players and decide whether to fold your hand or make your bet by calling or raising the amount that the big blind staked. Once betting is done, players are dealt their remaining three cards face up called a flop.
Everyone gets the chance to see what other players have on the flop and will either hold what they have with no extra bet, fold their hand or increase their bet. Next, the dealer deals another card face up on the table. This is called a turn. Betting or folding again ensues. The last card dealt face up is called the river. After this last deal, again, you have betting or folding.
After the river, if there are still at least two players left, there is a showdown. This means that the person who placed the last bet has to show their hand first. The other player left can then fold or show their cards.
